After her best supporting actress win for her role as "Mary" in the movie "Precious", Mo'Nique expressed the importance of honoring Hattie McDaniel in her acceptance speech.

The reason why I have this gardenia in my hair, it is the flower that Hattie McDaniel wore when she accepted her Oscar. So for you, Miss Hattie McDaniel, I feel you all over me," Mo'Nique said.
Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American to be nominated and win an Oscar for her role as "Mammy" in the timeless classic, "Gone With the Wind" .
